AIFS Conference 2008
It is with great pleasure that I announce that the 10th Australian Institute of Family Studies Conference, Families Through Life, will be held in Melbourne on 9-11 July 2008.
I invite you to submit a paper or a symposia proposal for consideration at this Conference.
The Conference will focus on five major themes:
- Family Relationships
- Children, Youth and Patterns of Care
- Families and Work
- Families and Community Life
- Violence and Protection Issues
These are the themes around which the Institute’s current work is organised. They are closely related to national policy priorities and areas of particular research interest. Within the framework of these broad themes there are sub-themes covering an extensive range of topics related to families that allow a broader scope for discussion. Although these areas are the focus of the conference, it is not restricted solely to these themes.
I encourage papers in all areas of family research and studies to be submitted for consideration for inclusion in the Conference's 3-day program. The closing date for submissions is
15 February 2008.
I warmly welcome your participation.

Professor Alan Hayes
Director, Australian Institute of Family Studies

The conference is a valuable forum for wide-ranging discussions about family issues. This Conference is aimed at national and international researchers, policy makers and practitioners, providing an opportunity for delegates to discuss recent family research, contribute to ongoing debates and explore key policy implications.
The Conference enables researchers, policy makers and practitioners to report on their findings from family-related research and their practice. With such a wide range of discipline areas being offered, it is an opportunity to share knowledge, and reflect on the policy and practice implications of research findings.
Themes:
- Family Relationships
- Children, Youth and Patterns of Care
- Families and Work
- Families and Community Life
- Violence and Protection Issues
There will also be an open stream for papers that do not directly
fit into these themes.
The Institute also welcomes papers exploring research methodologies
and problems (especially longitudinal work), theory relating to family
and gender, comparative research, policy and program evaluation, and historical scholarship.
Guidelines:
Submissions must be made online via the Conference website
www.aifsconference08.com by
15 February 2008.
- Abstracts are restricted to 250 words.
- Abstracts for symposia (3 or 4 papers) are to be submitted

possible and be incorporated into the Program.
- Authors will receive the scheduled date and time well in
advance to book their registration and travel arrangements.
- All accepted abstracts will be published in the Abstract Book
and posted on the AIFS website after the Conference.
- It is a requirement that all presenting authors register for the Conference by 15 April 2008 to ensure publication in the Abstract Book.
- By submitting a paper, you agree that, if it is accepted, you and each presenter will be available to present your submission at the allocated times and consequently will register and attend the Conference at your own expense.
